ALTHOUGH buying a house for the first time is a big responsibility, new home owners say it has its advantages.

Ditiro Seitshiro of Main Reef Village near Roodepoort took out a loan of R435000 in 2008.

"It was hard at first because we were expecting a child and my partner's medical bills were high, but we later settled to the new payments," Seitshiro says.

He pays a monthly bond premium of R4400 for the house, which has two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom. The mortgage will last for 20 years.

"Owning a house is a great advantage. I have peace of mind and no landlord to deal with at the end of the month," he says.

Seitshiro, 30, who works at Absa's retail banking, says the house is also an investment for the future when he sells it.

Matthews Setsetse, a 52-year-old taxi owner, shares the same sentiments.

"It is quite expensive buying a house, but it gives you peace of mind that you have a home of your own," he says.

Setsetsepays R4200 a month on his bond. His loan was extended from 20 years to 30 years to reduce his premiums from R7000.

Setsetse's house has three bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom, a living room and kitchen.

He lives with his partner in the house.
