THE Zululand district municipality has come under fire from the eDumbe residents, including the local police, for failing to unblock a sewer pipe at a local police station.

Police officials at Paulpietersburg described the station as the "worst and most horrible" because of overflowing raw sewage and blocked toilets.

The situation is so bad that the local health inspectorate has threatened to shut down the police station if the situation does not improve.

Sowetan is in possession of three letters from the SAPS to the eDumbe and Zululand municipalities and the other to the department of public works complaining about the problem.

ANC chief whip in the eDumbe municipality, Majuba Mavuso, said the situation had worsened.

He said an agreement was reached in 2006 for the municipality to provide services but it had not honoured it.

"Businesses are complaining and it is worse for the police stationed there," Mavuso said.

"As if that is not enough, there are more than 60 inmates in the cells and the majority of them are now sick because of the problem.

A police officer, who asked not to be named, described the situation as horrible.

Others urged MEC for community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu to intervene or "close down the station completely".
