THE ANC Youth League in the eThekwini region has called on President Jacob Zuma to fire Sport and Recreation Minister Makhenkesi Stofile.

The region is accusing Stofile of having played no active role in the World Cup, compared to his colleagues like Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana, who has been "in the spotlight since the start of the Cup".

Ethekwini regional head of information and publicity Smange Ntsodi said yesterday: "The youth league believes that the minister's performance is shocking, to say the least. As the minister of sport and recreation, Reverend Stofile should be visible and play a leading role.

"We have lost confidence in him, and we therefore call on the president to immediately replace him with a more energetic person who will represent the aspirations of millions of young people of South Africa."

Besides the minister's "poor performance", the youth league noted the smooth running of the World Cup and the euphoria displayed by South Africans and scores of visitors.

"We would like to congratulate Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa, his deputy Fikile Mbalula and national police commissioner General Bheki Cele for their outstanding performance. They have done well in ensuring that thousands of our visitors are safe."

However, the league's provincial leadership has since distanced itself from the eThekwini's call.

Provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo said: "We distance ourselves from these unfortunate remarks that are divisive in nature."

Instead, Mtolo congratulated Stofile and the government for successfully hosting the World Cup.
