Mngqithi's contract with Lamontville Golden Arrows expires today. Tovey was fired by the Usuthu management on Monday.
On Tovey's expulsion, the club said: "The AmaZulu board of directors has decided to terminate the current head coach, Neil Tovey's contract with AmaZulu Football Club with immediate effect.
"The club is reviewing CVs from international coaches and will make an announcement in the near future on who will take up the vacant post. There was an agreement between the club and the former coach on certain key focus areas such as league position and these were not achieved. (There will be) no further discussions on this matter with the media until a follow-up board meeting has been concluded to discuss issues related to the 2010-11 (season) technical team and players.
"The club would like to thank Neil Tovey for his commitment to the club and wishes him well in his future coaching career."
Our deep throat at the Usuthu kraal insisted yesterday that Mngqithi was replacing Tovey: "Manqoba is certainly joining AmaZulu. I know it's something the management would deny but definitely he is coming on board."
Though many are surprised by Usuthu's decision to give Tovey the boot after he steered the team to the final of the Nedbank Cup - their first final in 18 years - there have been constant complaints that the former Bafana Bafana captain is very "rude".
Mngqithi said yesterday: "I don't know anything about joining AmaZulu because I have not spoken to anyone from the club.
"I am still the Golden Arrows coach and have not thought of leaving them."
