Juma Huseni, Ahmed Ali, George Francis and Shafiri Bakari briefly appeared in court where it was also established that they had previous convictions related to the possession of stolen goods. Their status in South Africa was questioned during their appearance.
The men who were allegedly behind the shooting of Lieutenant-General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, who is exiled in South Africa, had their case postponed to allow verification of their status in the country.
They remain in custody until their next appearance on July 14.
Nyamwasa was shot and wounded outside his home in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, on June 19. He has been in the country since February and had received asylum status.
Last week, the department of Justice said it was deciding whether South Africa should consider a Rwandan extradition request for Nyamwasa.
Nyamwasa has been accused in his home country of trying to destabilise Rwanda while he was in the country and in India, where he recently served as Rwanda's ambassador.
He was also allegedly linked to three grenade attacks in Rwanda's capital. - Sapa
