box and dine for mogale

ACCOMPLISHED boxing promoters Rodney Berman and Jeff Ellis will stage a tournament at Emperors Palace on July 28 to raise funds for Sibusiso Mogale, a talented swimmer who was born without arms.

Berman and Ellis hope to raise funds to buy prosthetic arms for Mogale through this box-and-dine tournament.

Mogale was born with a deformity called phocomelia but the 22-year-old has not allowed his disability to stop him from swimming.

In 2004 Mogale swam the Midmar Mile for the first time, and won the Courage Trophy.

A year later he competed in three different countries. He won a gold medal in the Open Water Swim in England. He then went to Brazil for the Wheelchair and Amputee World Champs and managed to win two silver medals there.

He then travelled to Melbourne in Australia for the Schools Pacific Games where he won a bronze medal.

Mogale had great success at the recent World Disabled Championships in Durban, where he represented South Africa.

In 2006 he was approached by Telkom to appear in their advert.

Golden Gloves Promotions' spokesperson Terry Pettifer announced that the July 28 tournament was the brainchild of Wayne Smith, a well-known philanthropist.

Pettifer said twinkling fighters Tshifhiwa "Atomic Spider" Munyai, Johnny "Hurricane" Muller, Florante "Demolition Man" Simba and Joey Stiglingh will feature in the July 28 tournament.

Munyai holds the WBA International bantamweight title which will not be at stake.

Munyai, whose superb skills are honed in Gauteng by Elias Tshabalala, had about 2000 fans on the edge of their seats with his stunning display against the Philippines' Richard Ferreras at Emperors Palace in March.

It was his first fight under Tshabalala and his debut under Golden Gloves.

"We are determined to make this box-and-dine an event to be remembered," said Berman, adding that the final programme will be confirmed soon.

l Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr claimed the WBC silver middleweight title with a unanimous decision over John Duddy on Saturday night while Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera dominated Adailton Dejesus over 10 rounds in a super lightweight clash. The scores were 100-90, 98-92 and 99-91.

Both fights took place in Texas.
