Ebony Club forced to cancel race

THE Ebony Athletic Club in Soweto has been forced to cancel its yearly 10km road race, which was scheduled to take place on June 27, due to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

THE Ebony Athletic Club in Soweto has been forced to cancel its yearly 10km road race, which was scheduled to take place on June 27, due to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Club chairperson William Mathabe said they decided to cancel the race after the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) could not provide them with emergency and police personnel.

"We had a meeting with JOC to discuss operations on June 27. We appreciate the fact that they were honest with us by saying it won't be possible for them to help us this time round.

"All their people have been working on 2010 Fifa World Cup projects.

"We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to runners who had already started preparations for the race.

"As patriotic South Africans, we are behind the World Cup and feel that Dr Irvin Khoza and the Local Organising Committee have made us proud.

"We have been given a date for the race in 2011, which we are discussing with other stakeholders before making it public.

"Our message to the runners is that we have an even bigger race next year," said Mathabe, adding that they were happy that the athletics family was fully behind the World Cup.
