The majority of South African licensed drivers, if not all, do not have the discipline, ability or intelligence to drive at high speeds and for this reason, the maximum speed limit should be reduced to 100km with severe penalties for transgressors.
The reduction of the speed limit in the 1970s to 80km was highly successful, thanks to the Organisation of Oil Producing Countries.
Penalties that should be imposed are suspension and loss of licences and in cases over 160km, confiscation of vehicles.
The other major cause of accidents is driving under the influence of liquor and penalties must include the mandatory suspension of a licence for the first offence and debarred from driving for life for the second offence.
This must include sporting celebrities and politicians.
