Athletics SA storm brewing

TEMPERS are expected to flare tomorrow at Athletics South Africa's special general meeting, or council, where the relocation of the headquarters tops the agenda.

TEMPERS are expected to flare tomorrow at Athletics South Africa's special general meeting, or council, where the relocation of the headquarters tops the agenda.

Sowetan has been reliably informed that there is a strong possibility that the ASA offices might be moved to Stellenbosch in Western Cape.

"There is a strong feeling that Boland Athletics will end up running ASA because there are people who want the headquarters in Stellenbosch," said an ASA insider.

"I know there are others who feel we should take the headquarters to Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort, which has been upgraded as a 2010 Fifa World Cup training venue.

"We have been informed that ASA is in the process of selling the house that we have been using as our headquarters, due to financial challenges."

Also to be discussed at the meeting, which will be attended by all provincial structures and associate members, is the amendment to the constitution.

The proposed changes include that the ASA board will consist of all 17 provincial presidents, which is likely to create divisions in the sport.

Currently, the ASA board is elected by the council, which is the highest decision-making body of the beleaguered federation.

At the last council a decision was taken to support the suspended board's stance on the handling of the Caster Semenya gender verification tests. Former ASA president Leonard Chuene and his board were suspended for their handling of the Semenya scandal.
