Thousands of fans scrambled to get a glimpse of the former supermodel and her husband Djimon Housou.
Simmons hosted a party at her Baby Phat store that left her fans angry. But the overwhelming response had not been anticipated.
Capetonians turned out in their thousands, causing a near-chaotic scene outside the trendy store.
Speaking for Simmons, Ruwaida Foster, managing director of Urban Luxury Brands, said yesterday: "I do apologise for this.
"Unfortunately no one could have anticipated this crowd, which resulted in chaos as everyone tried to push forward to see Kimora.
"Many wonderful people that were first in line (including the media) were pushed back in the chaos that ensued," Foster said.
"She (Simmons) would have got there much sooner but her car was mobbed in the street by fans. When she got to the mall her security team and the mall's security had to ensure her safety before they brought her down.
"Kimora was being grabbed from every angle. The fact that she stayed to meet the fans and media that waited means she took it all in her stride when anyone else would have gone running with the hysterics that ensued from fans who tried to get to her.
"Again, no one anticipated so many people, So the security that the mall and her team arranged was not enough," she said.
Invited "VIP customers" and journalists were left fuming. Some waited for more than six hours to see the style icon.
"I arrived at about 3pm because we received an SMS saying that she (Simmons) is here and we should come wearing our Baby Phat clothes but I'm totally disappointed," said a frustrated Moeshfieqa Manan, who left at 9pm.
Jody Davids said: "I'm such a big fan. I saw a story in the paper saying she was coming. I watched her on DStv. I thought I would get in there and take some pictures of her."
Michelle Snitcher, who had brought her two kids hoping they would leave with "goodie bags", said the whole affair was "disgusting".
One of her kids said she had been number six in the queue before the chaos.
"It's not organised. We were first in line, but now we are last," she said.
