The announcement was made yesterday by the founders of the campaign. Simelela said she was happy to be the ambassador of such a campaign.
"HIV and Aids require a comprehensive holistic response. It is with this in mind that South Africa launched the HIV counselling and testing campaign. This is not only about the testing of individuals (HIV status) but screening for other general health conditions and ensuring access to health care. In addition, there is continuous evaluation of impact on service delivery, particularly in public health facilities," she said.
"It is with this collective effort of raising awareness, and ensuring integrated, harmonious flow of operations in all fields that we can score goals towards scaling up HIV prevention, treatment, care and support."
Goals for South Africa is a private initiative founded last year with the objective of capitalising on the media attention paid to the Fifa World Cup to increase global awareness of HIV-Aids in South Africa and the rest of the world. The campaign also aims to raise funds to support projects to stem the spread of the disease.
Partners in this campaign include Care, the German Red Cross and Action Medeor e.V. Politicians, including Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit, chairperson of the North Rhine-Westphalian parliamentary group Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Sylvia Löhrmann, and Cologne mayor Hans-Werner Bartsch are honorary ambassadors.
