THE South African Municipal Workers Union in Ekurhuleni has given the metro council an ultimatum to stop using the services of private companies or be prepared to face the might of the workers.
The trade union said yesterday that the metro council had until today to stop wasting council money by hiring external companies to do work done by staff.
Samwu branch secretary Koena Ramotlou said the warning follows protracted efforts by the union to persuade the council to attend to the issue, which they raised at the beginning of the year.
Ramotlou said Mayor Ntombi Mekgwe had promised to come back to them after their meeting on April 1, which he said she has not done.
"If she does not respond by the end of business tomorrow (today), we will meet as the branch executive to decide the way forward.
"This might lead to a strike action," he said.
He said the municipality has outsourced services in departments that include legal, fleet management, human resources, call centre, community safety, administration and information technology.
Council spokesperson Zweli Dlamini questioned Samwu's intention to threaten a strike over the usage of companies.
