IF YOU were to restrict the success of hosting the 2010 World Cup to Bafana Bafana's results on the field of play then you will have brought the scope of your mental capacity into disrepute. In fact, who wins this coveted trophy in this historic global event is neither here nor there.

IF YOU were to restrict the success of hosting the 2010 World Cup to Bafana Bafana's results on the field of play then you will have brought the scope of your mental capacity into disrepute. In fact, who wins this coveted trophy in this historic global event is neither here nor there.

As far as I am concerned, there is no measuring instrument that can determine the effect that the Fifa World Cup South Africa 2010 has had and will continue to have not only in our own country but in the continent as a whole.

Historically Africa has been perceived as an illegitimate child among the nations of the world.

We have been, rightly and wrongly, associated with genocides, famine, disaster, corruption, sickness and death.

In fact, Africa has been generally referred to as the "dark continent", ironically by those who have directly benefitted from the suppression, exploitation and the brutal rape of the riches that are unique to Africa.

Therefore, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that from this day on, I will walk proud and compete on an equal basis with other members of the human race.

I will regard myself as a proud African who is capable of making things happen, an African whose unfair and discriminatory history has ensured that I treat others with respect and dignity.

This World Cup will ensure that our children, the future of this continent, grow up in an enabling environment that focuses more on one's accomplishments rather than the colour of one's skin.

The successful hosting of this glorious and massive event will transfer immeasurable confidence and the affirmation and status of all Africans that are found in all corners of the globe.

It is in this spirit that I measure the success of this tournament and I sincerely hope that other nations that are embroiled in conflict can realise the greatest prize that peace and harmony, tolerance and understanding can bring in our troubled souls.

I am truly proud to be an African and I can assure you that my immune system has been immensely boosted by such a great achievement and the whole world is a witness to my overflowing joy.
