prisoners on the run

POLICE are appealing to the public to help them re-arrest two long-term serving prisoners who escaped from the Barberton juvenile prison.

Henry Mnisi, 21, and Collin Klompie Makhubela, 20, pictured, allegedly escaped by crawling under the wire fence of the prison in Mpumalanga on Thursday.

Makhubela, who is also known as Given Sibusiso Mashego, was sentenced to 45 years imprisonment for common robbery and attempted murder on December 2005. His conviction relates to the shooting of a police officer on October 2004.

Makhubela also robbed the police officer of his service pistol before being arrested and charged with attempted murder as well as common robbery.

Mnisi was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for rape and house robbery that he committed in February 2008.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said yesterday: "We also suspect that the two escapees might have been involved in yet another house robbery and rape that happened at Almedia, about 8km from Barberton, hours after their escape."

He said two men broke into a house and raped a woman before ransacking the house and taking two cellphones, groceries, as well as clothes.

"We request the families of the escapees to contact us if they happen to know their whereabouts," Hlathi said.

"The public is also requested to assist us in our quest to re-arrest these prisoners.

"Please do not confront them as they are regarded as very dangerous," he said.

Anyone with information should contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 086-0010-111.
