WHILE big brothers are sweating it out at the ongoing Fifa World Cup, some talented young players from around the globe will be displaying their skills at the youth soccer tournament in Soweto.

And you can expect the French flag to fly prouder at the French Schools Soccer Under-10 tournament in Klipspruit sports grounds, Soweto starting from today than at the Fifa showpiece.

A total of 24 countries will take part in the inaugural seven-a-side tournament that ends on Saturday.

South Africa will be represented by Winnie Ngwekazi Primary School of Pimville in Soweto, while host and Johannesburg-based French school Lycee Francais Jules Verne will stand for France.

Other schools that will compete are from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Egypt, England, US, China, Vietnam, Denmark, Canada, Ireland and Norway.

The event is aimed at exposing pupils from different countries to play competitive international football.

Organiser Phumla Mabilo said the theme for the tournament was "Let's see the World through the eyes of the children".

"We are looking forward to an exciting and successful tournament.

"We urge the community of Soweto and the surrounding areas to come in large numbers to spur on the youngsters as they display their skills," Mabilo said.
