She completed her teaching diploma at Wilberforce Teachers College in Evaton and taught in Evaton for several years.
She was married to Walter Mnikathi and moved to Western Native Township.
She joined Thusanang Primary School in Moroka, Soweto, in 1962 as a teacher.
She was subsequently recruited by the City of Johannesburg as a youth leader and took charge of Realeka Youth Club in Rockville.
Her stay at Realeka touched many as she filled the important role of art, music, sports coach, modern dance and traditional dance teacher.
Her charges were able to compete and win awards in ballroom and Latin American dancing, drama and puppetry, Scottish dancing, netball and volley ball, table tennis, gumboot dancing and a host of indoor games.
Mnikathi travelled with her charges to different parts of the country, including Mnini Camp in Durban, Cape Town, Maputo in Mozambique, Lesotho, and Manyeleti in Mpumalanga.
She retired in the mid 1980's from Realeka and further taught at Molalatladi Primary School.
MaMnikathi found Itireleng Early Learning Centre in 1988 at her house.
This programme saw many pupils being prepared for lower primary schooling before Grade R was introduced in government schools.
She was a member of the Mother's Union at St Francis Anglican Church in Moroka.
While most of us are survived by our next of kin, MaMnikathi is survived by a whole village.
She will be buried at Avalon Cemetery at 9am after a service at St Francis in Moroka at 7am.
