SMITH HOPES TO END TOUR ON HIGH

THOUGH a long way from home, the Proteas still managed to celebrate Youth Day on Wednesday by holding a coaching clinic for children at the venue for the second Test against West Indies in St Kitts, which gets under way today.

But the visitors will know it's not kids play when they front up to the West Indies in a match that if they win, will sew up the series 2-0.

For captain Graeme Smith it has been a long tour of the Caribbean, and while the results have gone his team's way, it has not always been plain sailing for the left-handed opening batsman.

"It has been a frustrating couple of weeks for me," Smith told Sowetan yesterday. "The middle finger injury hasn't been the easiest thing for me to overcome. It has taken me a long time to get the general feeling back in my batting and there is still a long way to go.

"From my perspective, it was important for me to contribute. It has been a regular occurrence on this tour for me to get out in the 20s and 30s, so it was nice to make a proper contribution and get stuck in when it counted."

Smith was referring to his knock of 90 in the second innings of the first Test against the West Indies, which went some way to ensuring his team's comfortable 163-run victory.

His fingers have taken a beating of late, the most recent injury happening during the Indian Premier League.

The South Africans will come up against an unchanged West Indies side.

lThe match will be shown live on SuperSport2, with play starting at 4pm South African time.
