Retail sales on the rise

RETAIL trade sales entered their fourth consecutive month of positive growth in April, revised Statistics SA figures showed yesterday.

RETAIL trade sales entered their fourth consecutive month of positive growth in April, revised Statistics SA figures showed yesterday.

Retail sales expanded by 3,2percent in April after increasing a revised 2,7percent in March.

This bears evidence that the sector has been out of recession much longer than initially reported.

The revised figures showed that retail sales were up 0,4percent in January as opposed to the 1,5percent contraction reported.

The 1,3percent decline in retail sales recorded in February was revised upwards to 0,8percent, while the 1,0percent increase recorded for March was revised to a much-stronger 2,7percent.

Retail trade sales, at constant 2008 prices, for the three months ended April 2010 reflected an increase of 2,2percent compared with the three months ended April 2009. - I-Net Bridge
