Safa president Kirsten Nematandani has described next Tuesday's final group match against France in Bloemfontein as the most important one for Carlos Alberto Parreira's charges.
Bafana are still to qualify for the second round after being eliminated in the group stages during the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals.
Nematandani said they appreciated the support given to the national squad by South Africans.
"We still have a game to play and it would be premature to say that we will not make it to the second round," Nematandani said.
"In Football anything is possible and we need to have positive minds and encourage our team as we face France in our next match."
Bafana have enjoyed unprecedented support from the nation, with record attendances in all the matches, fan parks and massive television viewership.
"The support of the nation is crucial at this stage. The players and the technical team are aware of the significance of the next match, and we are expecting the team to approach the match with confidence," Nematandani said.
"Our team has shown great potential in all matches but unfortunately luck was not on our side when we lost against Uruguay. We are confident we will do our best against France."
