The campaign is run by telecoms giant Vodacom and leading media company Avusa. The messages will appear in Avusa's six major newspapers - Sowetan, The Times, The Herald, The Dispatch, Sunday World and Sunday Times.

Local Organising Committee spokesperson Rich Mkhondo yesterday urged South Africans to keep faith in Bafana and to continue supporting the team.

He said: "We are great hosts, and hope the nation will remain great hosts. As organising committee we are saddened by the fact that the nation is in mourning, but we call on South Africans to remain good hosts as they have been for the past seven days."

Actress and television presenter Salamina Mosese said: "We have home-ground advantage. We have to be united behind the team. The event is not only about soccer, we all want to make sure that it is a success, and we should give the visitors a great time."

Musician Howza said: "If they could just take us through to the group stages, then we will be happy as die-hard fans."

Sports presenter Carol Manana said: "There has never been a greater time for Bafana to shine. The time is now. The World Cup is an African dream.

"We are hosts and are making history. Bafana has all the support they need. They have the passion. Now they must go out there and make us proud."

SABC sports anchor Walter Mokoena said: "The time is now for them to make us proud. They must conquer the world."
