Bafana have to die with boots on

THIS is one time Bafana Bafana do not need a coach.

THIS is one time Bafana Bafana do not need a coach.

Forget the 3-0 humiliation. Roll up your sleeves and die - if you have to - with your boots on.

There was no doubt all along: our boys are technically way behind just about every team in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

That is why they can do without a Carlos Alberto Parreira.

The late Percy "Chippa Chippa" Moloi, the most talented South African footballer, once confirmed this when he spoke about his Orlando Pirates side that swept the boards in 1975.

Their coach was one Tony Sanderson but Moloi summed him up thus: "He was not a coach, Horatio. We took those titles because we had talent and determination - we all wanted to play."

Moloi could do anything Lionel Messi can do with the ball - and more. At about 1,65m, even a Matthew Booth had to strain all sinews to win a high ball against him.

His ball control was also unmatched, in my book.

"But you must have pluck. You must be prepared to fight for every ball," Moloi said.

Think Kaizer "Chincha Guluva" Motaung, the strictly left-footed ball juggler was also a willing workhorse.

Blinded by optimism, we refused to read the signs in the credible 1-1 draw with Mexico.

For most of that game, we were pinned in our half as the Mexicans showed us fine technique and the art of possession football.

Against Uruguay, Parreira had no plan to counter a midfield that not only blanketed their defence but raced through our middle like thoroughbreds against donkeys.

Indeed, those Fifa rankings do not lie. Bafana Bafana are 83rd and Uruguay 16th.

The only way forward for Teko, Reneilwe and all of you guys, is to go out there and never stop running.

Hustle them, go for every ball and make yourselves available for passes.

In any sport it is not dishonourable to lose but it is not acceptable to roll over at the sight of an opponent.

Ask Pitso Mosimane to tell you about Ryder Mofokeng and Ace Mnini - that is if you don't know them.

Mnini could slice through any defence. He would nutmeg Mofokeng but the battling former Kaizer Chiefs captain would be there soon after Mnini had slipped past.

That was tenacity at its best.

Bafana need to show it. It is the only way to force Thierry Henry and co off balance.

Forget Parreira. Die with your boots on.

Do not forget you are now playing in the World Cup because our struggle heroes laid their lives on the line for such moments.

Good luck.
