Nothing could make the 62-year-old Durban-born diva abandon her traditional repertoire - sung in isiZulu.
"In South Africa we had to sing in English to get jobs. I began to realise that music truly has no border, no language.," she said as she blazed an international trail in the 70s.
She spent the 80s between Holland and South Africa.
Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba - you name them - she was up there with all of them.
Mhlongo internationalised maskandi and the world hereafter is her next oyster.
