The best present Mahlangu received, though, was a brand new house that was handed over to her on her 86th birthday on Tuesday.
Minister of Arts and Culture Lulu Xingwana and City of Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa handed her the keys to the new double-storey house that was built behind her old house.
She will be sharing the 13-roomed house with her son, his wife and her eight grandchildren
The fully furnished house has six bedrooms, two bathrooms, two toilets, a lounge, dining room and kitchen.
Her son Solomon was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to death in March 1977. He was hanged on April 6 1979 .
Solomon's death sentence sparked an international outcry but was not enough to convince the apartheid government to spare his life.
"Words cannot explain the way I feel today. I never thought I would live in such a beautiful big house. I know my son is looking down and smiling at me,. These people have outdone themselves," Martha said.
The house was built in honour of Solomon's courage and dedication to the cause of freedom.
The following were named in Solomon's memory, the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College in Tanzania; Solomon Mahlangu High School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape; Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Kwa-Mhlanga, Mpumalanga. A 6,2 metre high bronze statue was erected in Mamelodi West next to the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square.
"She has given the country a lot, the life of her son, and we just want to salute her. The world is a better place today because of people like her. We wish her a happy birthday and good health," Ramokgopa said.
Xingwana said the old house would be turned into a museum where young children would learn about Solomon and why it is important to celebrate him
Ramokgopa said she was honoured to be part of the team that helped build the dream house for the family.
