BAFANA FANS light up night

IT WAS the happiest festival for Bafana Bafana fans at the famous Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, last night.

IT WAS the happiest festival for Bafana Bafana fans at the famous Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, last night.

That was before Diego Forlan and Uruguay struck.

Local supporter Luciano Manadcas, whose first visit to the square was during Bafana's opening game against Mexico last Friday, had said the hysteria yesterday was like nothing he had ever experienced before. He said he had never been exposed to an atmosphere like that.

"It is the best atmosphere ever since the the World Cup started. We also have our best team in the field," he said.

Students Phakama Sigidi, Linell Penniston, Xolile Sithole and Fezile Hadebe said that they had braved the cold to support the team but their main focus was Simphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune.

The girls said they would blow vuvuzelas all night long.

Londani Makhoba said that despite the cold the feel of the event was lovely.

"The cold does not scare us. Bafana are our troops - they are playing for us, we must support them," he said.

Thabo Mothibe, who is in a wheelchair, joined the hundreds who gathered to watch the game.

"I feel great, it is nice to be here to support the national team."
