Parties celebrate Youth Day

The 34th commemoration of the 1976 youth uprising will be celebrated under the theme "Working together for youth development through action".

lAs part of the commemoration ANC Youth League president Julius Malema will address youth at Batlharo Stadium in Kuruman, Northern Cape. The rally starts at 10am.

l At Freedom Park in Tshwane there will be the opening of a new museum called //hapo. There will also be the opening of a coffee shop and kiosk including exhibition of works that capture the history of the South Africa struggle against apartheid.

lDemocratic Alliance leader Hellen Zille will address the party's Youth Day rally in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

lIndependent Democrats leader Patricia De Lille will address a rally at Macassar Sports Field in Western Cape.

lIn Gauteng Morris Isaacson High School - the school whose student leaders led the uprising - will be a hub of activity.

City of Johannesburg executive mayor Amos Masondo will unveil a statue of the late Tsietsi Mashinini. Mashinini, who was a leader of the South African Student Movement, died in exile. Masondo will be accompanied by Gauteng provincial leaders including Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. The ceremony starts at 8am. The procession will then proceed to the Hector Pieterson Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony.

lThe Black Consciousness Party will also hold a rally at Morris Isaacson. The keynote address will be delivered by president Nchaupe Mokoape. The rally begins at 9am.

l The Department of Sports and Recreation will also commemorate the historic day with several sport activities held at Birchwood Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni. The event starts at 11am.

lThe Pan Africanist Congress will hold a commemorative rally in Kliptown, Soweto, starting at 10am.

lThe youth of Alexandra township will also hold their Youth Day celebrations at Pick n Pay Alex Junction, starting at 10am.
