THE statue of late 1976 student uprisings leader Tsietsi Mashinini will be unveiled at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto today at 8am.
Dee Mashinini, Tsietsi's brother who designed the statue, told Sowetan that dignitaries including the City of Johannesburg executive mayor Amos Masondo and activists from the liberation movement would attend the ceremony.
But Tsietsi' s wife, Welma Campbell, and the couple's children, who live in Liberia, will not attend the event . Both his parents are dead.
Mashinini said his brother's children will attend next year's 35th anniversary celebrations.
The giant statue has been erected on the grounds of the school where Mashinini was also a student in 1976. The statue is part of the Tsietsi Mashinini Memorial opposite the school at Mphutu Street in Central Western Jabavu.
Mashinini said the family was happy over the development.
"The statue of Mashinini symbolises the spirit of black power that was the banner for the people of Soweto and the country."
