The worst hit provinces were Western Cape and Free State, where heavy snowfalls were reported.
Temperatures plummeted to two degrees Celsius yesterday in Joburg.
"There was definitely widespread snow and it was heavy snow. We have had people sending us pictures of heavy snow," said weather forecaster Jacqueline Riet yesterday.
"We are expecting the snow to continue for the remainder of the day in Western and Eastern Cape as well as over Lesotho and the southern parts of Free State."
In Eastern Cape, traffic authorities reported several road closures at the Nico Malan, Lootsberg, Wapadsberg, Penhoek and Barkly passes because of the snow.
Johannesburg's emergency services warned soccer fans and tourists to be careful and make sure they are warm when celebrating at soccer venues.
"Major host cities, including Joburg, have and will experience high migration numbers of people from far-afield and locally," said emergency services spokesperson Percy Morokane.
"In our quest to make Johannesburg injury-free, we caution against wild celebrations without making sure that children and the elderly are safe in their homes."
