Busi Mhlongo succumbs to cancer

POPULAR maskandi musician Busi Mhlongo has died.

Mhlongo, who had a long battle with cancer died at the Chief Albert Lutui Hospital near Chesterville in Durban yesterday afternoon.

Mhlongo was born in the mountains of the KwaZulu- Natal. From a family of musicians, she learnt to play the drums at a tender age. When just a teenager, she won a musical competition in Johannesburg and joined the group African Jazz.

During the 70s she moved to London where she recorded with South African artists in exile such as Dudu Pukwana, Julian Bahula.

Thereafter Mhlongo became cosmopolitan, navigating between Holland and South Africa during the 80s.
