DINGAAN "The Rose of Soweto" Thobela, a philanthropist of note, is at it again.

Thobela, the first man to honour retired soccer legend Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe in the 1990s, is involved in an amateur development tournament at Albert Park in Durban tomorrow. He will also present boxers, including street kids, with gold and bronze medals.

The tournament, to be staged by promoter Thulani Magudulela under Ludonga Boxing Promotion, will start at 9am.

Thobela will be remembered for working with Julius "KK" Sono in arranging the benefit soccer tournament for Moripe in Pretoria.

Thobela, now a successful undertaker, has often buried poor people for free, so lending a hand to the needy is part of his life.

The boxing tournament Thobela will be involved in is part of tomorrow's Youth Day celebrations.

"This should encourage youngsters, especially those who want to emulate us," said Thobela, who was the darling of South Africa in his heyday as a professional fighter.

"People from KwaZulu-Natal were always supportive when I fought down there.

"I remember when Jake Matlala, Lehlohonolo Ledwaba and myself fought at the Village Green in Durban - the tournament attracted the biggest attendance ever there.

"So this is my humble way of saying thank you, but credit must go to Thulani Magudulela who was behind the move."

This will be a ground-breaking boxing event from Magudulela. It involves professional, amateur and even destitute fighters. Six provincial champions from KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape will exchange leather in non-title fights.

Magudulela has also made sure that women, many of them youngsters, will be part of this auspicious event He noted that they were equally involved in the student uprisings in Soweto on June 16 1976 that left more than 700 people dead.

"This day belongs to the youth," said Magudulela, who also thanked the KwaZulu-Natal department of sport for its help.
