R&B SINGING sensation Alicia Keys, who dazzled audiences at the opening concert of the 2010 Fifa World Cup at Orlando Stadium last Thursday, will be in Durban today.

The Empire State of Mind hitmaker will be in Wentworth, a Durban suburb that's plagued with gangsterism, violence, drug and alcohol abuse.

Keys, who is expecting her first child, will be officiating at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Blue Roof Wellness Centre, a former infamous nightclub she first visited four years ago.

It was known as the Blue Roof at the time.

When the star visited the club in 2006 she found an empty building that had the potential to restore life, hope and promise to the community by providing urgently needed Aids treatment and care. Through her organisation, Keep a Child Alive, Keys has transformed the Blue Roof Wellness Centre into a state-of-the-art, comprehensive care centre for people living with and affected by Aids.

Rhona Buckley, Blue Roof Wellness Centre Clinic director, said: "I have seen the Blue Roof Wellness Centre grow and thrive in the beautiful building we now inhabit, made possible by Alicia Keys and Keep a Child Alive.

"The centre currently provides life-saving anti-retroviral medication to 1000 patients and a plethora of services including HIV counselling and testing, home-based care, psycho-social support and a revolutionary nutrition programme through which we prepare free nutritious meals every day to patients and their families who visit the clinic.

"At the heart of this beautiful centre is a flourishing garden where patients and staff come together to plant and harvest vegetables that are used to create these healthy meals."
