ASPIRING and established artists from White City in Jabavu, Soweto, are preparing to showcase their talent to local and international visitors.
The event taking place at the Ipelegeng Community Centre is an initiative by Phaphama-Miracle Arts Lab.
This is the division of Phaphama Initiatives, which through arts and culture ensures development, self-growth, self-actualisation and poverty alleviation among youth in Soweto.
The programme called Phaphama Initiatives 2010 Soweto Experience includes theatre, music, dance, spoken word and carnival. The event boasts an exciting lineup of home-grown talent.
Programme coordinator Anna Lerner said the event will have something for everyone.
"For music lovers, bands Ree-burth, Stoneband and MMP Jazz Band will be performing. Soweto Entsha combine gumboot dancing, singing and drumming, to produce a 'new Soweto' style, fusing Gospel and dance," Lerner said.
Other acts, such as The Champions and Murga Nathi, promise an exciting display of music, dance and carnival.
For theatre lovers, Black Box Theatre will do a play under the June 16 Soweto uprising theme, and Ipelegeng Arts and Culture will stageA Dawn of A New Era.
"As part of the Phaphama-Ish Experiments, Bezllos X-Con Reloaded, a group of nine former prisoners will perform a show combining hip-hop and traditional dancing with singing. They are using the World Cup in South Africa to explore the interplay between local, traditional values and global urban trends," Lerner said.
Other performers include the Remmogo Dancers, Isambane, Accoustic Melodies, Dora's Junior Dancers, Impopoma ye-Afrika, Vuka Love Arts and Cultural Group.
Lerner said money raised by the performances will be used to support local artists and in the development of the Phaphama-Miracle ArtsLab.
The shows, which started on June 12, will run up to July 10 on selected days.
Tickets are going for R10 a person.
