BLACK PEOPLE NEED DEVELOPMENTAL BOOST TO GROW

CLEM Sunter writes about Afrikaners, Jews, immigrant Chinese and some such apparently industrious people as an example of the wonders of free enterprise.

"We need an entrepreneurial state in contrast to a developmental state," he writes about what South Africa needs today. His reasoning is based on observing a young Afrikaans couple that ran some lodge that ".offered everything from a long, beautiful walk to great food to a comfortable bed".

Black South Africans, I hear Sunter say here, are hankering after welfare when they should be entrepreneurial like the Afrikaners, Jews and immigrant Chinese.

I have no issue with Sunter's comments regarding the fact that black people need to be entrepreneurial, that they need to group together, love each other and help one another rise economically.

I agree that as black people we are not doing enough of this to improve our economic wellbeing.

Having said that, I think Sunter's premise is warped. Afrikaners built a developmental state for themselves. It was called apartheid South Africa. That's how this exemplary Afrikaner couple of his could open this impressive eco-lodge. Clem Sunter made a lot of the money that gave him passage to this eco-lodge under the same governance system. It was economically cool to be white then, and even more cool to be an Afrikaner. The California he cites as an example of what entrepreneurship can generate (it's "... the sixth largest economy in the world with 36 million people", he writes) had loads of money before it could invest in all its recent, most lucrative industries. It did not have colonialists who raped it and then left its people poor to fend for themselves on barren land.

Black people need a developmental boost to unleash their potential. Yes, we need our heads read when it comes to issues of self-hate. But you can't tell an angry, abused, hungry, homeless person without education that all that s/he needs is to have an entrepreneurial spirit and s/he will own and run an eco-lodge some day Clem! Be reasonable.

Maybe what we need to do is define what a developmental state is. In my view it is a state that is totally focused on generating enough money to develop its people, and by extension, its economy. I think this is good.

The idea that black South Africans don't need this sort of help is just shallow thinking.

If a country as advanced as Norway has a development fund for her people, why should South Africa, a country beset with so many economic problems, not work her way to having one?
