On the way to the stadium from park and rides, fans looked happy as they enjoyed their beers at some of Soweto's shebeens.
Most people who attended the show were wearing Bafana T- shits and waving South African flags.
President Jacob Zuma, who attended the do, took a swipe at critics and said that Africa had shown the world it was capable of handling everything, including world-class events.
"South Africa is the place to be. South Africa rocks," he said.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu was not to be out-shined and drew a wild applause when he paid tribute to his fellow Nobel Peace Laureate Nelson Mandela.

Dressed in a black sequined jacket, white blouse and black tights, the multiple Grammy winner called on President Jacob Zuma to continue to "right the wrongs of the previous regime" by addressing outstanding issues that continued to plague Africa and South Africa.
