YESTERDAY thousands of music lovers got together at the now revamped Orlando Stadium for the World Cup kickoff concert.

YESTERDAY thousands of music lovers got together at the now revamped Orlando Stadium for the World Cup kickoff concert.

While appreciating the spirit of unity created by such events our hope is that they will achieve even more than that.

We hope they will contribute to the legacy this World Cup promised to leave behind for South Africa and Africa as a whole.

According to Fifa part of the revenue generated by the concert will be used to fund the 20 Football for Hope Centres in disadvantaged communities.

The 20 Centres for 2010 is the official campaign of the 2010 Fifa World Cup aimed at promoting health, public health, education and football in targeted communities across Africa.

The initiative will hopefully address the untenable situation in which many communities in Africa continue to face serious social challenges.

The success of such initiatives will also go a long way to highlighting the social development role the beautiful game can play.

Also of importance is the opportunity that such campaigns create for communities to actively participate in their own development by using a sport that is largely accessible and supported by the majority.

So it is our fervent hope that such initiatives will become sustainable and leave the legacy that the World Cup has promised to Africa.
