Cop held for assaulting colleague

MPUMALANGA police are investigating a case against a police officer who allegedly assaulted a colleagues assigned to arrest his daughter for driving without a licence.

Mike Mkhonza ordered his colleagues not to arrest his daughter because she was an important figure in public life.

Police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said Constable Mike Mkhonza followed the officers to the scene where his daughter was arrested.

"But when they arrived at the police station he started shouting and grabbed an officer and assaulted him.

"Mkhonza was arrested by the organised crime unit on Tuesday at his home in Piet Retief," Hlathi said,

He appeared in the Piet Retief magistrate's court on Wednesday.

He was remanded pending his next court appearance next week on Tuesday.

"During his (Mkhonza's) arrest we also discovered two balaclavas, four live rounds for a 3.8 Special revolver, two spent cartridges, and three police magazines instead of two.

"We also found 29 live police rounds instead of the allowed number," Hlathi said - Masoka Dube
