Budler lies in wait for Rubillar

WHIRLWIND performer Hekkie "Hexecutioner" Budler has boldly declared himself super-ready to defend his IBO junior flyweight title on June 19.

Budler, the adored fighter who has made waves in the lowest weight division, will defend against Juanito Rubillar.

Their 12-rounder will top Golden Gloves' "Blockbuster" extravaganza at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni. Budler, 22, and Rubillar will be meeting for the second time.

Their first fight, which Budler won on points, took place at the same venue on February 27. Budler started well, winning the first three rounds, but the pendulum swung Rubillar's way from the fourth round onwards.

Judge Isaac Tshabalala scored it a draw at 114-114 while Lulama Mtya and Deon Dwarte were patriotic with their scoring of 117-113 and 115-113 in favour of Budler.

The 33-year-old Filipino believed he was robbed - so he lodged a complaint with the IBO, which ordered the rematch. To avoid repetition in the scoring department, the US-based sanctioning body has appointed only one local judge this time around, Terence Makaluza from Port Elizabeth.

The other two are Michael Fitzgerald from the US and Reginald Thompson from the UK, while Andile Matika from East London will be the referee. Len Hunt, the IBO's representative in Africa, will be fight superviser.

Promoter Rodney Berman, who staged the first fight, will do so again on June 19.

Budler, whose skills are honed by trainer Colin Nathan said he could not wait: "I don't talk too much. I prefer to do my talking with my fists in the ring."

"My training is a lot better than last time. I cut my fingers on my left hand last time, which required seven stitches - and that happened a week before the fight."

Budler is undefeated after 15 wins (5 KOs) while Rubillar, 33, has 48 wins (23 KOs), 14 losses and seven draws.

Fans must brace themselves for one hell of a war.
