The warning comes after five people, including a woman, were arrested for being in possession of 60 identity documents in Pinetown, outside Durban, on Wednesday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said a woman, who had gone to African Bank for a loan, led the police to a building where IDs, bank cash cards and pay slips were found.

"The woman went to the bank to apply for a R5000 loan. She had brought along her ID and pay slip.

"But the bank employees became suspicious because there were questions she could not give answers to and the police were called in," Zwane said.

He said the police interrogated her and she later led them to a building in Pinetown city centre.

"The police found four men and when they searched the building they discovered 60 IDs, government department pay slips, 13 FNB cash cards and a number of stamps from various government departments."

Zwane said a computer was also found.

The suspects, aged between 23 and 40, were expected to appear in the Pinetown magistrate's court today facing charges of fraud.

"People must not think that because there is a World Cup criminals will have a field day," Zwane said. "Actually the police are more vigilant and we warn all potential criminals that they will be arrested."
