THE Lebombo border post in Mpumalanga is fast becoming a preferred exit and entrance for smuggled drugs, including mandrax, which led to the arrest of two women this week.
The women, Nonsikelelo Maja, 50, and Neo Bikitsha, 28, appeared in the Barberton magistrate's court to face charges of dealing in drugs.
The women are expected to appear again on June 15 for bail application.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said the women were arrested by the Komatipoort police who were searching passengers on a bus that was coming from Mozambique.
"After searching the women the police discovered 1988 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R99400.
"Maja told us the drugs belonged to her and pleaded with the police not to arrest Bikitsha. But we arrested both of them since they were travelling together," Hlathi said.
In June last year 75000 mandrax tablets were discovered at the Lebombo border post, allegedly tucked in the false compartment of a trailer.
The R3,75million worth of drugs, which were to have been an exhibit in court, were subsequently stolen from a police storage facility.
The organised crime unit had tried in vain to find the culprits.
