Painful reality

THE move by the ANC Youth League to disband its Eastern Cape provincial executive committee is an indication of how the leadership tussle in the party has deteriorated.

THE move by the ANC Youth League to disband its Eastern Cape provincial executive committee is an indication of how the leadership tussle in the party has deteriorated.

At the heart of the decision is the leadership battle between ANCYL president Julius Malema and his deputy Andile Lungisa. Malema wants to run for a second term when the youth wing of the ANC holds its elective conference next year. Lungisa is challenging him.

Just like in the case of Cope, the real fight is now not about whether the ANCYL has an effective programme to address the needs of its constituency - the youth - it is rather about which leader to put into power so that he can then repay those leading his campaign with access to resources.

This is the reality that South Africa's youth and the electorate in general have to face.
