NELSON Mandela Bay Metro has opened the first alcohol evidence centre in Eastern Cape as part of its fight against drunken driving.

The centre (AEC) is an initiative of SABreweries, the SAPS and the department of safety and liaison.

Gavin Hudson, SAB's Cape region general manager, said: "Ensuring measurable and significant consequences for the crime of driving under the influence of alcohol is perhaps the most effective way of changing the attitude and, most importantly, the behaviour of those who still deem it acceptable to do so.

"Our intention in equipping the police with tools that can ensuresuccessful convictions is to make drinking and driving an unthinkable choice for South Africans."

The AEC will ensure that breath-alcohol tests for drunken drivers are conducted quickly and efficiently to improve administration of justice.

The centre will also assist law enforcement officers during theSoccer World Cup.
