THE South African Council for Businesswomen is on the lookout for courageous, informed and successful women entrepreneurs to enter its competition.

Thelma Mathamelo, president of the council (SACBW), said the competition, which is the key event on the council's calender, celebrates and honours women entrepreneurs who have made a mark in business.

"The SACBW's Businesswoman of the Year Competition is not just for any woman. The title is reserved for women who have made their mark in the business world and who meet the criteria of the competition," she said.

Entrants must be entrepreneurial business owners, professionals who own their own business or have a 50percent share in a business. Corporate women in senior management can also enter."

The competition is open to all women, irrespective of race, colour or background.

"Women are made of a very special and unique substance. They are go-getters, courageous, bold, informed and successful. In a nutshell, women are indescribable, un-containable and an inspiration," Mathamelo said.

Entrants can enter for the entrepreneur, professional and corporate categories before June 15.

Semifinalists will be selected from each province and provincial winners will become national finalists.

The national judging will take place on September 22 and 23 in Pretoria. The overall winner will be announced at a gala dinner in Vanderbijlpark on October 12.

The council, which has been operating for 25 years, recognises and empowers women in business through their affiliation with the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut, a member of Business Unity South Africa.
