Nine people die in two accidents

THREE people were killed when they tried to avoid an accident between three trucks on the N1, south of Bloemfontein, Free State police said yesterday.

THREE people were killed when they tried to avoid an accident between three trucks on the N1, south of Bloemfontein, Free State police said yesterday.

The accident happened near Edenburg at about 5.30am, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.

Two trucks heading towards Cape Town were following one another, while another truck, followed by a Nissan Hardbody bakkie, was driving towards Bloemfontein. One of the trucks apparently collided with the one in front of it, then veered into the path of the oncoming two vehicles.

The Nissan bakkie's driver tried to avoid the collision, but ended up beneath one of the trucks. "Three passengers in the Nissan died instantly."

The truck drivers were not injured.

In another accident, six people died and two were injured in a head-on collision on the R23 near Heidelberg, Johannesburg paramedics said yesterday.

Two cars were involved in a head-on collision and a bakkie crashed into the wreckage, Netcare911's Chris Botha said. - Sapa
