PORTUGAL winger Danny took full advantage of the opportunity presented by an injury to Nani with a goal and an assist in his team's 3-0 victory over Mozambique yesterday.

With Nani ruled out by a shoulder injury, coach Carlos Queiroz played it safe and started Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench.

The 28000-strong crowd at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, were disappointed not to see Ronaldo start and shook the stands when he came on in the 62nd minute. Danny was the liveliest Portuguese player, linking up well with Deco and Simao as Portugal missed a host of chances. Mozambique came closest to scoring when midfielder Hagy fired a long-distance shot that crashed against Eduardo's post on 40 minutes.

Portugal took control in the second half, with Danny scoring on 52 minutes. He provided a fine assist for Hugo Almeida to tap in in the 75th minute. Ronaldo's drive on 83 minutes was parried by Lama to Almeida, who scored his second goal. - Reuters
