Barry "Big Show" Mongwe, was a police officer, known and feared by criminals who shot him dead in 2008.

The state alleges that Mongwe was searching for his three alleged killers, who were suspected of being involved in various crimes at Thembelihle informal settlement, south of Johannesburg, but they found him first.

David Baloyi, 31, and Zokwazi Linda, 28, and a man known only as Sifiso allegedly found Mongwe driving around Thembelihleand shot him. Sifiso died three days later.

Baloyi and Linda yesterday claimed they were tortured by Mongwe's colleagues, forcing them to confess to the killing.

But the officer who took the statements, Constable Sam Mothobi, denied the allegations. He also denied Baloyi's claim that he came to him with wet pants after he was tortured.

Baloyi and Linda want the statements they made thrown out of court because they were forced to sign them.
