Regina Maponya worked for Plumblink SA, a plumbing company in Superbia, Polokwane, since 1998.
She worked as a receptionist but was later moved to do filing until she lost her job last month.
Maponya, who lives in Lebowakgomo township, said she was given a letter on arrival at work on the morning of May 13, notifying her of the termination of her employment.
She said there had never been any discussion about her employment prior to the letter and she was given only a week to submit forms to indicate her acceptance of the severance package.
The letter reads in part: "The current economic situation is having a detrimental effect on the company's performance and we have had a daunting task of reducing the staff complement in order to save the branch. You are free to notify us should you believe that we have erred in making your post redundant."
Maponya said she had not had any differences with either management or her colleagues, so she was surprised to receive the letter.
The widowed mother of two said she did not know how she would support her family without a regular income.
Maponya said that despite her having refused to sign the termination letter, the company had paid out her retrenchment package which was deposited into her bank account.
By yesterday, the company's regional operations manager Nicci Henderson had not returned messages left on his cellphone.
