A MEETING convened by Eastern Cape members of the ANC Youth League in Port Elizabeth at the weekend was "illegitimate", a national ANCYL spokesperson said yesterday.

"It is a pity there was such defiance," Magdalene Moonsamy said.

She was responding to reports that, despite instructions from the league's national working committee to meet in East London, hundreds of members held a separate conference at Coega Village, near Port Elizabeth.

"The gathering in Port Elizabeth was illegitimate," Moonsamy said.

Some youth league members in the Eastern Cape are supporters of the organisation's president, Julius Malema, while others back his deputy, Andile Lungisa, who is expected to challenge for the presidency next year. - Sapa
