THE police officer injured during the stampede on Sunday at Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni, is still recovering in hospital.

Thousands of soccer fans stampeded outside the stadium before a warm-up game between World Cup teams Nigeria and North Korea.

The 39-year-old warrant officer was admitted to Arwyp Medical Centre's orthopaedic unit in Ekurhuleni and treated for a broken rib, concussion and multiple bruises to his head and arms.

Police spokesperson Colonel Eugene Opperman said yesterday the officer could not be named because members of his family had not yet been informed of his injuries.

Hospital spokesperson Chantal Rudolph said the officer was in a stable condition.

Thirteen other people also injured during the stampede were treated at Thembisa Hospital.

Hospital spokesperson Lesibana Ledwaba said the people were treated for "soft tissue injuries" and were discharged the same day.

Opperman and Ekurhuleni emergency services spokes- person Roggers Mamaila said 15 people were injured, though neither hospital could account for the fifteenth person reportedly injured.
