Residents back tourism initiative

INANDA residents turned out in their hundreds yesterday to show support for the city's efforts to promote townships in the first Community Tourism Awareness programme.

The event, held at the Inanda JL Dube Stadium, saw Sama winners Big Nuz entertaining the crowd. The event was organised by the Durban tourism unit.

Unit head Phillip Sithole said: "The strategy is to attract and increase the percentage of visitors, both foreign and domestic, to the city.

"The strategy also involves showcasing previously disadvantaged areas and increasing the number of visitors and tourism benefits to previously disadvantaged areas.

"The activations are aimed at enhancing communities' understanding of tourism and building their recognition of tourism as an important contributor to the local economy."

Sithole said the Inanda tourism boost initiative was the first in a series of events aimed at achieving positive benefits during the tournament.

Similar events will be held in townships around KwaZulu-Natal where community members will be educated on the potential benefits of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the growth of the tourism industry and on the Fifa fan fest.
