A hive of activity to drum up support for the Paraguay team started with a colourful carnival in Woodburn on Saturday and ended at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Those present experienced a bit of kwaito and Shembe Church sounds, fashion, bikers and rickshaw displays.
Paraguay will make Pietermaritzburg their home during the World Cup.
The event was a collaborative effort of the Department of Arts and Culture, National Lottery Distribution Fund, Ithunga Development, Umgungundlovu district municipality and KwaZulu-Natal Young Designers.
MEC for arts, culture, sport and recreation Weziwe Thusi and Umgungundlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee led the carnival on the city streets.
Bhamjee urged people to provide extra hospitality to the Paraguayan tourists.
"It is important that we show love and support to the visitors in our district," he said.
"And we need to show them humanity and our pride as the district and nation."
