THE Department of Arts and Culture has budgeted R186million for World Cup-related arts and culture projects countrywide.
Minister Lulu Xingwana said in Pretoria yesterday that R59million had been used to fund 21 World Cup-related arts and culture projects, while R127million would be spent on 29 infrastructure development projects.
She said the department had also earmarked special projects for funding that "will help grow cultural awareness in South Africa". Most of the projects would expose foreign visitors "to the delight, sounds and textures of South Africa". She said a wide variety of projects had been selected.
The funded projects included Tap Roots, a musical directed by Victor Masondo; The Rivonia Trial; Ditshaba Performance and Craft Hub; Limpopo's Mapungubwe Arts Festival; KwaZulu-Natal Cultural Extravaganza; Dimbaza Craft Hub and The Wild Coast Spatial Development Initiative Festival, which is aimed at assisting poverty alleviation in Eastern Cape.
Finally, the In Conversation with Luthuli and Mandela Exhibition will be held at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha and Albert Luthuli Museum in Groutville, KZN.
